Long-Time Author Shares AHLEI Memories

Dr. jack 2013 Newsletter More than 30 years ago, Dr. Jack Ninemeier, CHA, CFBE, CHE, wrote his first AHLEI textbook, Planning and Control for Food and Beverage Operations. This spring, AHLEI published the eighth edition of that title.

This occasion spurred Ninemeier, professor emeritus, The School of Hospitality Business, Michigan State University, to reminisce about his long and production association with the Educational Institute and the changes that have happened over the years.

"My first experiences with the Educational Institute occurred in the mid-1970s when I worked on a series of food service-related training modules in a project that AHLEI personnel had negotiated with school food service administrators employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That was followed by other activities involving the development of student manuals to supplement AHLEI textbooks used in what were then called correspondence courses," said Ninemeier.

"My first AHLEI textbook (Planning and Control for Food and Beverage Operations) was published in 1982 and, interestingly, it is has just been released in its eighth edition. I recall being very proud of these early activities because I knew of AHLEI's extensive range of services to the international hospitality industry and was very happy to be involved in it. My position in what is now The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University (MSU) allowed me easy access to the AHLEI which, for many years, was headquartered on the MSU campus. I participated in numerous research projects for AHLEI during that time and learned much about the "real world" of hospitality businesses."

He continued, "Mention of the impact of technology on textbook writing and publishing seems in order. 'Yesterday's' authors typed their books using hard copy pages with lined margins (don't ever type outside the margins!), and AHLEI had to maintain extensive and expensive inventories of printed books in its warehouse. Today's authors use word processing, and AHLEI can print books to order and offer customized textbooks containing chapters from numerous authors and materials from the instructor. The use of e-books or courses that are so much more convenient for instructors and students is not news today, but is another example of technological progress over what does not seem to be a lot of years."

"AHLEI has always benefited from a staff of dedicated experts over the years, and fond memories of holiday parties, lunches, and personal conversations are also part of the good times this writer will remember."
