      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LMP Focus Group Begins Work on Lodging Management Program Revision

Orlando, Florida, July 2011-The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) recently convened a focus group of hospitality educators and state hospitality association education directors to identify the direction and scope of revisions to the Lodging Management Program (LMP), AHLEI's two-year high school hospitality curriculum.

Focus group members included Lisa Perras, teacher, White Mountain Academy, Whitefield, New Hampshire; Patricia LeCompte, teacher, Monroe Career & Technical Institute, Bartonsville, Pennsylvania; Darron Kirkley, teacher, North Central High School, Kershaw, South Carolina; Jillian Ely, education coordinator, Arkansas Hospitality Association, and Douglas O'Flaherty, director of operations, South Carolina Hospitality Association.

The focus group met with AHLEI's instructional designers on June 30 and July 1 to review the LMP's current content and format and make recommendations for a major revision that will more effectively align the program with current educational and industry requirements.

The most important of these is the aligning of all print and electronic materials with the new Common Core Standards being implemented by the Departments of Education in 43 states, District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands due to be in use by 2014.

Other items discussed by the group included reordering the program's content to focus on hospitality, tourism, and property operations in Year 1 and management and leadership in Year 2; emphasizing soft skills that translate across multiple industries; providing both historical and global perspectives on hospitality and tourism; and creating a new teacher wrap-around edition with teaching content, student activities; group projects; homework assignments; and other supplemental activities on DVD. The new print materials will be image-rich with text support of graphics to meet today's textbook standards. Finally, all assessments and exams will be completely overhauled.

One of the next major steps in the revision process involves identifying and working with hospitality industry experts to ensure that all content reflects current industry operations processes and procedures.
