      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Educational Institute Collaborates on New Hotel Analytics Certification

Orlando, Florida-The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI), the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) and Smith Travel Research and the SHARE Center (STR) have collaborated on a new student certification program. The "STAR Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics" is being offered jointly by the three organizations to undergraduate and graduate students.

The STAR Certification for Hotel Industry Metrics and Analytics is the only hotel-related certification for university students graduating from hospitality and tourism programs. This recognition provides evidence of a thorough knowledge of the foundational metrics and definitions that are used by the hotel industry. Recipients have proven that they can "do the math" and interpret the results. They have demonstrated an ability to analyze various types of hotel industry data and to make strategic inferences based upon that analysis.

Certification also confirms a comprehensive understanding of benchmarking and performance reports. Designees have a grasp of the current landscape of the hotel industry, including relevant current events.

The cost of the certification exam is $75 per student that includes one free retake in the event the exam is not passed on the first attempt. A $25 fee applies to additional retakes. Upon a passing score of 70% (35 correct out of a possible 50) the student receives a Certificate of Completion.

As part of the collaboration, EI is responsible for generating and grading the exams and issuing certificates. Smith Travel Research developed the content and test item bank, while I-CHRIE is providing instructional resource development.

The pilot phase of the program began in September. Universities will be required to send one or more instructors to a Train the Trainer experience conducted by STR. Schools that would like to participate may submit an email expressing their interest to one of the following people: Steve Hood for Smith Travel Research, steve@str.com; Chris Jack for the Educational Institute, cjack@ahla.com; or Cynthia Deale for I-CHRIE, ohalloranc@ecu.edu.
